Whelp. I did it.
I went and registered for the first of 7 classes I need to take to apply to nursing school.
I have wavered over this for a LONG time. At least a year. After a year, I STILL want to do it.
It won't be easy. It will be expensive. I will be asking for some serious responsibility-shouldering from my family.
But after being a SAHM for 10 years, I am DYING to do something else. Something that will help people. Something that I am really interested in. Something that is flexible enough that it would work with the Laundry's schedule. Something where there are actual JOBS out there. (Seriously, have you all LOOKED for a job lately? I watch CNN and all, but as part of this whole process, I decided to look for a job in my former fields and see what was out there. NOTHING. Especially not for someone who hasn't worked in 10 years.)
So here we go.
It is terrifying.
And? Exhilarating.
When I got my registration form and paid my bill, I felt a little thrill. That rapid heartbeat, tingly scalp, adrenaline rush.
Then, I went to the bookstore and bought my books, and I got that other feeling. The one in the pit of your stomach that makes you feel like you might barf.
So I went outside, with my new textbooks hugged tight to my chest, breathed in some icy air and told myself I CAN DO THIS.
It's one little baby step. And there's always a chance to modify the plan along the way if I need to. But it's the first step I have taken for ME in a very long time.
Confidential to Jennifer: The Dansko clogs feel FABULOUS on my feet. I have achy feet and legs just in a regular day. Honestly, that is one of the things that makes me nervous about nursing... how much my legs will hurt at the end of a shift. But, my nurse friends rave about these shoes, as does my OB-GYN, and I have to agree. They are a little heavy, which takes some getting used to. I would say they are worth the investment. I have also heard great things from nurses about Crocs. They have a professional line . Non-skid, reinforced toes, no holes (gotta keep fluids off your socks). I don't think either one will win you a fashion award, but I wear Crocs around the house a lot and they also help my achy feet and legs. I'd love to hear about your nursing school experience, by the way!! Email me at laundryforsix@gmail.com.
Confidential to Erin: I will definitely do a review of the Flip. The one thing I can say is that it IS hard to hold steady because it's so small. So some of the videos are more herky-jerky than they would be with a bigger heavier camera. I do love the size though - I can throw it in my purse and pull it out to film some of the silly things the kids do that I normally would not have captured. I don't have an iPhone, maybe an iPhone can do the same thing? We do have a bigger video camera that is not digital, and I think we will be keeping that too for videoing birthdays and Christmas.

Congrats, good luck and you can do it!!!!
On the achy legs thing, try the Skecher shape ups (or one of the cheaper versions from TheraShoe (sold at Kmart) or Dr. Scholl's. I was amazed. My knee and back quit hurting. Just...stopped. And, as an added bonus, feet don't get cold walking on sidewalks in the winter. :) I was skeptical but am amazed at how well they work.
Ummmm, that sounded like a paid commercial. It wasn't. It's just early.
Love your blog. As a relatively new TS mom, I find it inspirational. But my girl wasn't diagnosed until she was 13 so I thought all the quirky behavior early on was just that...quirky.
Wow! That's awesome! Glad to hear you're doing something for yourself. You'll do great.
I am so glad you are doing this. You will make a great nurse...actually I see you more as a Dr. Rosenberg so after nursing school I think that med school should be next. Where are you taking the 7 classes? Do they start in the January semester? I am happy for you and please let me know if you need any help with childcare, etc.
Awesome! Congratulations and good for you!!!!!!
Yay! I love nursing! And the schedule is one of the absolute best things about it! :) I also love my Danskos!
I'm so glad you did this. So glad. I think it will be good for your family.
So PROUD of you! I could never be a nurse and I so admire people who can make a difference in that filed. I am so glad I made the decision to go back to school-a month into the first class and I have learned so much! It makes me feel smart and not a little tingly :)
And Therashoes-awesome!
Rock on with your bad-ass, Laundress self! YOU GO!
When we spent time in the hospital with our son 4 years ago, the nurses ALL raved about the Dansko clogs and the pro Crocs. They ALL wore 'em. All of them. I would say, do not cheap out on quality footwear now. Sincerely, A girl who knows from foot pain, owing to two bunions and a wicked hammertoe.
Just found your blog via Thrifty Decor Chic.....and must say congrats on your BIG step ... I am an RN and it was the best move ever. It's no easy task but it's a great career.....LOVE IT!!!!!
And then the croc/dansko thingy .....I swore by Dansko's ...loved em and never had a sore foot...and I work 12 hour shifts...and NEVER sit!!! FOR 12 HOURS!!! Then switched to crocs.....OMG .....still NEVER a sore foot.......both are great. Except you can get 5 for the price of 1........either way you won't be disappointed ....nursing, crocs or danskos......SAM
Good for you. Follow your dream.
OMG! I only have one with a full time job! You are a brave woman!
you'll love it! I enjoyed the studying sooooo much, in fact I'm looking to do something else soon...if I wasn't blogging lol!
I did midwifery degree recently...you'll surely need those dansko's lol
oh my gosh, congratulations!!!! that is so awesome! after 10 years of being a SAHM, you deserve to follow your dreams and do this! good luck, it will be hard. but, just think, in 10/20/30 years, when your kids have kids, and their pediatricians say "don't listen to your parents, they did things different back in their day", you can tell them you have a degree and a job that proves you know what you are talking about!
Woo hoo!!! Congratulations and good luck!!
