Today was one of the Perfect Days. There are a handful in my mothering career. Where everything worked out - the weather, the traffic, the kids, and it really couldn't have been better.
I met a friend at a playground in DC today. It's just a neighborhood playground, but it's a nice one. Big, but not too big. Shady. Bathrooms. Fenced in! And lucky for us, the DC Parks and Recreation staff was there passing out toys, organizing games, setting up crafts.
We had 5 kids between us (3 of mine - mGal has gymnastics camp this week) and 2 of hers. Between the ages of 10 and 2.
And they had a blast.
They climbed and swung and slid. They played wiffle ball and hockey. There were frisbees and pom poms. They made mac and cheese and salad out of mulch. They munched (on snacks, and possibly a bit of mulch). They got along and barely needed us at all. My friend and I got to talk almost the entire! FIVE! HOUR! time! I think it might possibly be the longest conversation I've had since I became a mother.
When it was time to go, they all came right along. No arguing, or negotiating or dragging necessary. They hopped in the car and off we went. Sunkissed and sweaty and more than a little dirty. Back just in time to pick up mGirl at camp. And the good mood just kept on going. They were fed and washed and pajama'd and put in bed and their tired little bodies went right to sleep.
Never fear! Tomorrow, I'm sure, we will be back to all-hell-breaking-loose, as usual.
